The war against AMD starts again! With its Ryzen 7 1700X, 1800X and 2700X, AMD was until now the only foundry to offer consumer chips with 8 cores. If these references pushed Intel to accelerate the release of its 8th generation Coffee Lake Core (by inflating the number of cores by the way), they remained limited to 6 blocks. New leaks reveal units finally equipped with 8 physical cores.
The competition is definitely good. On August 21, 2017, Intel was lifting the veil on the 8th generation of its Core processors, the Coffee Lake, a series of chips equipped with a larger number of physical cores with a 14nm engraving optimization. The big return of AMD in the race, with Ryzen 7 1700X and 1800X incorporating 8 hearts for 16 threads was no stranger to this announcement somewhat hasty. If it allowed Intel to get out of the eternal pattern of mainstream processors equipped with 4 physical cores (unchanged for ten years!), It was still necessary to be content, in the best case, 6 cores for 12 threads. A limit today pushed back with the announcement of next chips with 8 physical cores.
The Intel Processor Validation Process unveiled two new Coffee Lake-S references, still unknown, which each include eight physical cores with HyperThreading, or 16 threads. For now, we only know their thermal envelope (95 and 80 W), and the almost certain presence of the GT2 graphics circuit, but their operating frequencies remain unknown. In all likelihood, these two new processors should be associated with the high-end Z390 chipset that is about to land on motherboards equipped with a socket LGA1151. There are few major new features, apart from the support of Wireless-AC 802.11 AC, Bluetooth 5.0 and six USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10 Gb/s) ports and ten USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports (5 gb/s). However, we would witness the emergence of a new high-end platform for gaming configurations.
For the moment, these rumors bring more questions than answers, but let's bet that Intel will definitely lift the veil on these chips equipped with 8 physical cores at the Computex 2018 Taipei, which will take place from June 5 to 9 next.
