Not very original in the plethora of electric shavers, the Philips Series 5000 S5587 / 10 relies on its SkinIQ technology which measures hair density 125 times per second to win the bet? Launched at € 99, the Philips Series 5000 S5587 / 10 is an electric shaver with three rotating heads, intended exclusively for trimming facial hair. It benefits from everything that one is entitled to expect from this type of device: sharp blades (45 per disc), 360° flexibility of the heads, a precision mini-trimmer or even a waterproofness that allows it to be used in the shower.
Obviously, this 5000 series benefits from a few additional tips such as the possibility of opening the head for a quick cleaning or even SkinIQ technology; sensors measure the density of the user's facial hair 125 times per second in order to adapt the cutting power automatically.
Philips Series 5000 Getting started
Like many electric shavers, the Philips Series 5000 S5587/10 gives pride of place to plastic. Fortunately, the materials seem to be of good quality and the grip area on the sides of the machine is particularly pleasant to handle. We're less enthusiastic about the shiny plastic used on the front which has an annoying tendency to retain fingerprints, palm prints and spills.
It is on this shiny area that Philips has placed the power button which, suddenly, falls perfectly under the thumb. This also accommodates an autonomy indicator in the form of three aligned diodes. It certainly has the merit of existing, but we would have liked a little more precision, if only to anticipate the risks of a half-trimmed beard for lack of a sufficiently charged battery. To overcome this eventuality, Philips promises that a charge of only 5 minutes can reach the end of a shaving session.
Note that the display also indicates when it is time to clean the shaving heads with an icon representing three drops. Finally, it is possible to lock the shaver by pressing the on / off button for three seconds; a little more welcome that will avoid many inconveniences.
The Philips Series 5000 S5587 / 10 weighs 210 grams. But, more importantly, it is well balanced and we pass it over our male cheeks with ease; those used to electric shaving should therefore not be too disturbed, less in any case than during the first shaves carried out with a more atypical model like the Panasonic ER-GK80-S503.
Philips promises a 360° moving head and, on the whole, it is indeed quite flexible, although some positions are a little less easy to adopt than others; nothing too bad, just tilt the Series 5000 S5587 / 10 to reach all areas of the face. However, we regret that the cutting areas are a little small compared to their support and that it is so difficult to reach a specific area. Fortunately, the precision trimmer can treat certain areas in particular.
What does not spoil anything, it is useless to clip an accessory on the S5587 / 10 to benefit from it, as requested for example by the Braun 70-S7200cc. Indeed, it is cleverly integrated into the razor, on its rear part, and it is enough to make play the zipper so that the mower of a little less than 3 cm long unfolds. Be careful, this is still very limited and there is no question of shaving your head with or any other surface of substantial size.
In its box devoid of any polystyrene storage, it should be noted that the S5587 / 10 is delivered with the traditional mini cleaning brush, a cover to protect the blades and a soft fabric transport bag that is neither water repellent nor waterproof.
Philips Series 5000 Shaving
As an electric shaver, the Philips Series 5000 S5587 / 10 is unable to trim a supplied beard. If you want to change, look for a completely hairless style, you will therefore have to manage with a dedicated mower, the one of the device clearly not being designed for that.
On the other hand, to go from a three-day-old beard to a baby's skin, S5587 / 10 is effective. It may not be the model that glides the best on the skin, but the blades cut through the hair without catching, although it can sometimes happen. Be careful, not everything is perfect and it will probably be necessary to iron two or three times on certain areas to be sure to remove all traces of beard, but this is nothing unusual. The SkinIQ system does not seem to have had any influence during our various tests but our facial hair was perhaps not sufficiently provided for it to be expressed.
It takes 53 minutes to fully charge the Philips Series 5000, which is more or less the average of the other electric shavers in our comparison. When the batteries are 100% full, he can officiate for 1 h 40 min. It is therefore much more enduring than the Panasonic ES-LV6N-S803 whose autonomy does not exceed 45 minutes.
Philips Series 5000 Cleaning
The Philips Series 5000 S5587 / 10 is completely devoid of cleaning base and manual maintenance is required to maintain its cutting qualities. Fortunately, the operation is not complicated. By pressing the button on the front of the head, it opens by itself thanks to a spring system. All that remains is to use the mini-brush provided to remove the cut hairs that could seize the delicate gears. However, you will have to proceed with care to be sure to remove everything.
Cleaning the mower is also very easy. We appreciated the ease with which we remove and replace the rotating blades thanks to a system of ring to clip and unclip; it's not always the case. However, you will have to pay 50 € to acquire a new game.
Philips Series 5000 Noise
We measured the sound level of the Series 5000 S5587 / 10 with a sound level meter placed 20 cm, 5 cm and a few millimeters from the device in order to simulate use on the neck, on the cheeks and very close to the ears.
When the rotating blades are working, we measured 64 dB (A), 72 dB (A) and 77 dB (A) respectively. Our hearing capacities are therefore not at risk of much, even if the slightly high-pitched noise is necessarily annoying in the long run; this is the lot of all electric razors.
We carried out the same tests with the mower, which surprisingly is much noisier. Indeed, the sound level reaches 70 dB (A) at 20 cm, 76 dB (A) at 5 cm and 80 dB (A) at a few millimeters from the sound level meter. The noise is therefore a little more painful and we will cut our legs very quickly so as not to have to endure it anymore.
Philips Series 5000 STRONG POINTS:
- Precision trimmer integrated into the device.
- Substantial autonomy.
- Simple to maintain.
- Easy-to-replace rotating blades.
Philips Series 5000 WEAK POINTS:
- Small areas of shaving compared to the main head.
- Few accessories provided.
- A little noisy mower.
Philips Series 5000 FINAL CONCLUSION
The Philips Series 5000 S5587 / 10 represents an interesting entry into the world of electric shavers. It fulfills its main mission (shaving the beard clean) with seriousness while providing some additional services such as the precision trimmer, noisy certainly, but essential for aesthetes of beardless faces. Due to its price positioning, we have to do without certain accessories such as a cleaning base. But the simplicity with which an in-depth interview is carried out overcomes this small pitfall.
